On Father’s Day

dad+me

I’m so thankful to have my dad in my life even though our relationship hasn’t been exactly how I imagined as a little girl.

I didn’t grow up with him in my household and I couldn’t see him as often as I wanted. Because of that and because of all that I went through with my mom, it was hard for me to feel connected to him or even be open to a healthy relationship with him.

I found myself comparing our relationship, not to the ones other daddies and daughters had, but to the one I had with my mom. I often wondered how different things would be if I hadn’t have gone through all that I did, but honestly, I know it was for the best. We probably still would have a good relationship, I just don’t think I would be as appreciative of it.

Over the years, we’ve both had to be intentional about our daddy-daughter time. Schedules and other responsibilities were not going to get in the way of that for too long without one of us saying something. I got to experience my dad as a nurturer. And if you know him, he is a huge guy, but he also has the biggest heart. Who knew all the trauma I experienced would create a close bond with him.

And although I sometimes wished my childhood could’ve been different, I’m kind of glad I went through all that I did. A lot of times when we experience pain, we don’t see how that can become pleasure in other parts of our lives. And I’m so glad I’ve been blessed to experience so much love. Not only from him, but from my grandad, my uncles, and most of all God.

I know there are many that don’t even know their dad, let alone have a bond with them. Some have dads in heaven, some have experienced abuse from their dad, and some who are just trying to be enough for their dad. And while that’s not my exact story, I can still acknowledge that stories like these (and more) exist. Very real individuals, with feelings, and unhealed trauma.

However you’re spending today, I hope it’s a good one. Grieve, reflect, and give thanks.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads! 🤎
