6 Types of People to Follow on Instagram

After you unfollow accounts you no longer relate to, what’s your approach to finding new ones?

Some people don’t think twice about who they follow because it’s, “just social media”.

But, let me tell you why you should put a little more thought into it.

You Are What You Consume

What you expose yourself to, you ultimately become.

If you follow people who are always in drama, you’ll find yourself feeling drained, or worse, in the drama too.

But if you follow people who are doing something positive with themselves, you’ll want to create that as well.

Our thoughts are a direct link to how we live.

And sometimes we subconsciously subscribe to lifestyles, limited thinking, or other characteristics we aren’t going after.

That’s why it’s important to be mindful of who we allow into our digital spaces.

So here’s a guide to help you curate a feed you love logging in to.

I’ve included some accounts I admire under each type, but know it’s easy (and normal) for a person to fall under more than one!

Who to Follow

Someone who reminds you of you.

Find people who share the same interests, hobbies, job, mindset, hair type, body feature or story as you.

They don’t have to check all the boxes, they just need to be along your spectrum.

@sopharush

@issarae

@faceovermatter

@breenylee

Someone who lives differently than you.

Be open to people who aren’t like you.

(within means)

You don’t have to be besties, but challenge yourself to find something about them to relate to.

Some categories to explore: faith, race, status, location, sexuality, ethnicity, political party, etc.

@shinanova

@ravenelyse

@aaronsmakeup

@inspiroue

Someone who promotes healthy relationships.

With God, yourself, and other people.

Stay encouraged and learn to be a better asset in the roles you play.

Expose yourself to the fruitful relationships you want to develop.

@everythingiswe

@brenebrown

@curly_therapist

@werenotreallystrangers

@therealsweetspot

Someone who lives how you want to live.

Maybe they possess a quality that you’re working toward or do something you plan to.

Create a space that promotes dreaming and use it as motivation.

@sew_trill

@lovemichellana

@victoriouslogan

@mattedwards

Someone who makes you laugh.

Laughter is so good for the soul.

Make sure you get a laugh in as often as you can.

@jayversace

@yungbbq

@alissa.ashley

@elsaucepapii

@c.b.3

Someone who promotes growth in learning and healing.

Follow people who can teach you things or encourage personal growth.

If education or counseling isn’t accessible to you, online communities are a great place to start, because there are so many free resources.

Many even have books that you might have access to through your local library.

@endlesslybecoming

@fleurdelisspeaks

@morganharpernichols

@drcarolineleaf

@candyss.love

@nakeiahomer

@minaa_b

I mentioned some accounts with bigger platforms, but don’t forget about the people you know personally.

Find a healthy way to connect with all of them.

If you find yourself comparing or fantasizing about their life to the point you feel crappy about your own, pump the breaks.

And as always, unfollow whenever you need to.

Just make sure you’re doing your part in creating the lifestyle you’re going after.

Who are some of your favorite accounts to follow?

Share their links/tags with me in the comments.
